The global coronavirus pandemic is only the latest in decades of healthcare devastation for BIPOC communities: more illness, less care, more death. Many illnesses disproportionately affect certain populations due to disparities in healthcare access, but the pandemic helped shine a light on racism as a public health issue that needs to be broadly addressed. In 2021 and beyond, our government and health systems will need to make major shifts to address health inequality among ethnic groups, minorities and low-income populations.

State Sen. Diana DiZoglio. (State House News Service.)
State Sen. Diana DiZoglio wants answers to questions about the state’s troubled COVID-19 vaccine rollout and is prepared to ask the state auditor to investigate if necessary.
DiZoglio said one question is how certain vendors were selected to help distribute the vaccine. She said she wants answers from Gov. Charlie Baker’s administration or will push state Auditor Suzanne M. Bump to conduct an audit. In a letter last week to Bump, DiZoglio said she has heard concerns from residents around transparency and accountability in the rollout process.
DiZoglio said her office asked the state Department of Public Health whether the state formally solicited proposals, but was told that “since vaccination distribution is a federal process, (the state does) not have a role in that.”

Albemarle County charter school holds public renaming meeting By Steve Rappaport | February 22, 2021 at 7:45 PM EST - Updated February 22 at 10:47 PM
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - The list of possible names for Albemarle Countyâs newest charter school will get cut from 10 to three after a community public meeting Monday night.
Sixty percent of more than 600 replies to an online survey completed last week showed a preference to keep the name of Murray Community School.
This is the latest review of a county school named after an individual.
âWeâre a unique schoolâ said committee chair Stephanie Passman. âWe have a great mission of what we do within our school division and thereâs been a call for not having to explain our name, so maybe having something in the name that gives a sense of what it is that makes us unique and special in our school division.â
